FAQs For Orthodontics
What is an orthodontic screening?
An orthodontic screening is a quick check of your child’s teeth and jaw to spot early signs of crowding, bite issues, or alignment concerns.
When should my child have their first orthodontic screening?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first screening around age 7, when permanent teeth begin to appear.
Does early screening mean my child needs braces?
Not always. Early screenings help us monitor development and guide jaw growth. Treatment may not be needed right away—or at all.
What are signs my child might need early orthodontic treatment?
Signs include crowded or crooked teeth, difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or jaws that seem too far forward or back.
What happens if we wait too long for an orthodontic screening?
Delaying care can lead to more complex problems later, such as tooth extractions, surgery, or longer treatment time in the teen years.
Is early orthodontic treatment painful for kids?
Early treatments like expanders or limited braces are gentle and designed to work with natural growth. Most kids adjust quickly and do great!
Is orthodontic treatment only for kids?
Not at all! More adults than ever are getting orthodontic treatment. It's never too late to straighten your teeth and improve your oral health.
What’s the difference between braces and Invisalign?
Braces use metal brackets and wires, while Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners. Both are effective—your choice depends on your needs and lifestyle.
Will orthodontics fix my bite too?
Yes! In addition to straightening your teeth, orthodontics improves your bite, making chewing, speaking, and cleaning your teeth easier.
Are braces painful?
You might feel mild soreness after adjustments, but most patients adapt quickly. We use gentle methods to keep you as comfortable as possible.
Can I still eat my favorite foods?
With Invisalign, yes! For braces, you’ll need to avoid sticky or hard foods—but we’ll give you tips so you don’t miss out.
Are braces only for cosmetic purposes?
No. While braces do improve appearance, they are primarily used to correct bite problems, prevent jaw pain, and improve oral function.
What dental problems can braces help prevent?
Braces can prevent tooth wear, chipped teeth, TMJ pain, gum disease, and even speech problems caused by misalignment.
Do straight teeth really improve oral hygiene?
Yes. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of plaque buildup, tartar, and gum disease.
Can braces fix jaw pain or headaches?
Yes. Correcting a misaligned bite can relieve pressure on the jaw, reduce headaches, and ease TMJ-related discomfort.
Is it harder to care for teeth with braces?
Braces require more effort to clean, but many patients form stronger hygiene habits that stick long after treatment ends.
Can braces improve digestion?
Yes. A proper bite allows food to be chewed more effectively, aiding digestion and nutrient absorption.
How can braces affect speech?
Braces correct misalignments that interfere with tongue placement, helping to resolve speech issues like lisps or slurring.
Do braces really prevent tooth damage?
Yes. Braces align your bite, reducing the risk of chipped or worn teeth caused by uneven contact.
What is the emotional benefit of getting braces?
Braces can boost self-confidence by creating a straighter smile, helping patients feel more comfortable speaking, smiling, and socializing.
Can adults benefit from braces too?
Absolutely. Braces are effective at any age and can improve dental health, function, and appearance well into adulthood.
Is Invisalign as effective as braces?
For many mild to moderate alignment issues, Invisalign is just as effective as traditional braces.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment time varies, but most patients complete Invisalign or braces in 12 to 24 months.
Can adults really get braces or Invisalign?
Absolutely — adults make great candidates for orthodontics, especially with discreet options like Invisalign.
Will braces or Invisalign change my speech?
You may have a short adjustment period, but most patients speak normally within a few days.
Do braces or Invisalign hurt?
You might feel pressure or soreness after adjustments, but it usually fades within a few days.
How much do braces or Invisalign cost?
Costs vary based on treatment length and complexity. We offer affordable payment plans to make your dream smile accessible.
How often do I need to visit the dentist during treatment?
For braces, visits are usually every 4–6 weeks for adjustments. Invisalign check-ins may be less frequent.
Will I have to wear a retainer after treatment?
Yes! Retainers help maintain your new smile and prevent teeth from shifting back.

I have been a patient here for 11 years and they do a great job. The staff is so friendly and concerned about my care. When I got cancer they took extra care to make sure everything they did worked with my treatment plan. They would fit me in when I had a window between my chemo therapy. It was great to have one less thing to worry about.

I brought my daughter here as a referral from her regular dentist, and we have now switched over to coming here regularly. They are so kind and patient and help you feel relaxed. They can get everything you need done right then and there. My daughter was so nervous, but they guided her through everything and answered all her questions without hesitation.

Great and throughout dentist office including all assistants and staff. Honest and professional. They do not try to “ sell” you on non necessary things. Found cavities that were not seen by another dentist only one month before. So happy I changed to this office.

Started going to Artistic Dentistry because some of my family members are current patients. I’ve already gone for a few cleanings and fillings and everyone is very professional. I was super nervous about my wisdom tooth extraction and I left shocked because of how easy it was and it was super fast (I only had one thankfully). Dr. Saab really is great and I’d recommend Artistic Dentistry to anyone!
